Quick answer
WORTH IT — the default first-timer answer, and it deserves to be

Makati CBD is the establishment capital of the Philippines and the easiest place in the metro to be a visitor: Greenbelt and Glorietta malls linked by covered walkways, the highest café and restaurant density in the country, the Salcedo Saturday and Legazpi Sunday markets, a two-star and a one-star Michelin restaurant, and pavements you can actually use after dark. Rooms run ₱3,500–11,000. The honest weakness is that the CBD empties after 10pm — which is exactly why Poblacion sits fifteen minutes away.

Who it is for

Who should stay in Makati — and who should not

Stay in Makati if you want one base that works for sightseeing, eating and business without ever feeling like a target. Do not stay here if you want to feel like you are in the Philippines the moment you step outside.

Right for: first-timers, solo travellers, couples who want to walk to dinner, food-led trips, business travellers, and anyone splitting time between old Manila and the modern metro. Ayala, Legazpi and Salcedo are the three blocks to book in.

Wrong for: travellers with young children who want green space and pavements (BGC does that better), anyone whose flight is before 9am (Newport), and anyone who came looking for street life at 11pm on a Tuesday.

The Michelin layer is the 2026 reason Makati has pulled ahead: two-starred Helm and Bib Gourmand Manam are both in Ayala Triangle, Toyo Eatery and Celera are starred and in the city, and nine of the metro's Bib Gourmands are inside Makati's boundaries.

Getting out is easy: MRT-3 Ayala station is on the EDSA line for Ortigas and Cubao, the EDSA Busway runs the same corridor traffic-proof, and Grab to Intramuros is ₱250–400 and 25–50 minutes depending on the hour.

What to actually do in Makati

01

Salcedo Saturday Market, then Legazpi Sunday Market

WORTH ITSat 7am–2pm · free entry

Running since 2004 and still the best regional-food graze in the metro: Ilocano longganisa, Bicol express, kapeng barako from Batangas, and a cross-section of Manila's middle class doing its weekly shop. Legazpi on Sunday is the smaller, calmer sibling.

02

Ayala Triangle Gardens and the Michelin cluster

WORTH ITFree · restaurants ₱600–12,000

Two-star Helm and Bib Gourmand Manam sit in the same complex, with the gardens between the towers as the only real green space in the CBD. December brings the light show that half of Manila queues for.

03

Ayala Museum — Gold of Ancestors

WORTH IT₱425 foreign adult · Tue–Sun 9–6

The best-curated museum in the metro and the correct rainy-day answer if you are based here. The pre-colonial gold floor is the reason to go; the history dioramas are the reason people stay longer than planned.

04

Walk to Poblacion for the evening

WORTH IT15 min on foot · drinks ₱120–600

The single best thing about staying in Makati CBD is that you can leave it on foot. Poblacion starts about fifteen minutes east and runs until 4am — a Michelin star, a top-100-Asia bar and street tacos inside a few blocks.

Makati FAQ

Is Makati safe at night?

Makati CBD is the safest central district in the metro to walk at night, and locals genuinely do. The caveat everyone adds: the safety is bounded — it thins out as you move toward the edges, and Poblacion, fifteen minutes away, is where phone-snatching after 2am actually happens.

Is Makati or Intramuros better to stay in?

Makati, for almost everyone. Intramuros is the better morning and the worse evening: it is beautiful, historic and largely shut after dark, with a handful of hotels. Stay in Makati and visit Intramuros; do the reverse only if waking up inside the walls is specifically the point.

How far is Makati from Manila airport?

About 8km, which means ₱250–450 by Grab and anywhere from 25 to 60 minutes. Rush hour runs 7–10am and 3–7pm and can double that — the EDSA reconstruction that started in December 2025 makes the afternoon band particularly unreliable.

What is there to do in Makati?

Greenbelt and Glorietta for shopping, the Ayala Museum's pre-colonial gold collection, Salcedo Saturday and Legazpi Sunday markets, Ayala Triangle Gardens, a Michelin two-star and nine Bib Gourmand restaurants, and a fifteen-minute walk to Poblacion's bars. It is a base rather than a sight.

Is Makati expensive?

By Philippine standards yes, by international standards no. A good mid-range room is ₱3,500–6,500, a Bib Gourmand dinner ₱600–1,500 a head, a flat white ₱160–250 and a Grab across the CBD ₱150–300. The peso near record lows makes it about 8–10% cheaper in dollars than 2024.
