Stay in BGC if you are travelling with children, want pavements that work, or would rather everything felt like a well-run city than like Manila. Times are door-to-door by Grab and assume you are not travelling in the 7–10am or 3–7pm bands, when both can double. The EDSA rebuild runs to 2027 and makes afternoons the least predictable.
One winner per traveller
First-timers → Makati
Central, safe on foot at night, walkable to a real night out, and it puts you 25–50 minutes from Intramuros rather than 35–70. Book the Ayala, Legazpi or Salcedo blocks.
Families with young children → BGC
The pavements alone decide it. Add the Mind Museum, parks with grass, covered walkways between malls, and the fact that nothing about the district will alarm anyone. Worth the extra ₱1,000–2,000 a night.
Food-led trips → Makati, then Poblacion
Two-star Helm, one-star Toyo Eatery and Celera, plus nine of the metro's Bib Gourmands, are inside Makati. Kasa Palma's star is in Poblacion, fifteen minutes' walk away. Nothing else in the country is this concentrated.
Nightlife → Makati (Poblacion)
Organic density and price beat the big-club polish of BGC Uptown, and you can walk home. BGC wins only if you specifically want large rooms, name DJs and a strict door.
Nervous first-time-in-Asia travellers → BGC
If the thought of Manila makes you anxious, BGC removes essentially all of it. You will see less of the country, and that is a legitimate trade to make on a first visit.
